Scheduling Your Flight

To schedule your flight please purchase your vouchers/tickets online. The availability calendar can be viewed during the purchase process. The hot air balloon flying season in Ontario runs from May 25th – October 6th. We offer morning and evening flights, 7 days a week, and will primarily fly in the beautiful Kitchener/Waterloo area.

Flight times are approximate but we always aim for about 1 hour in the air, depending on the availability of suitable terrain for landing and weather conditions on the day. You are likely to be with us for 3 to 4 hours in total, from meeting to being back at the launch site. Often, we are able to launch right from the meeting site, but occasionally we will relocate pending wind direction.

Flight Day

On arrival at your launch site, at the specified meeting time, you will see the balloon and the crew starting to prepare your flight. The pilot will collect Passenger Agreement Forms (please bring them with you) and give you a short safety briefing.

The pilot will then proceed to inflate the balloon. If you prefer a more hands-on experience, we will invite you to assist when conditions allow. As the pilot inflates the balloon with burners (hot air) the balloon envelope will rise to an upright position above the basket. Some final flight checks will be carried out and the pilot will invite you to board. For ease, our baskets have foot holes to assist with getting in and out of the basket compartments. If you think you may have difficulty with this then please speak with the crew on arrival and they may be able to arrange for you to board prior to inflation whilst the basket is on its side.

It's now time for launch and you will gently lift off skywards. Even on windier days when initially you may experience some turbulent motion on the surface, as soon as you are airborne all becomes tranquil. The Hot Air Balloon will now slowly ascend to its cruising height of around 2 to 4000 ft. and where the most picturesque perfect views can be found. You may even be flying alongside wisps of cloud.

We cannot control the direction of our hot air balloon rides; they are fully dependent on the wind direction. However, our skilled pilots navigate through the sky making use of changing wind directions at different elevations to steer the balloon gently right or left as they ascend and descend.

As well as communicating with air traffic control, the pilot will also remain in contact with the ground crew who will be following the balloon as it travels on its course. Quite often we can predict the area where the balloon is likely to land based on wind direction and speed. Upon landing, the balloon and basket will be packed away (with help from volunteers), and the ground crew will return passengers to the meeting site.

Because the balloon floats with the wind you can barely feel a breeze and the sensation makes the whole experience comfortable and exhilarating at the same time.

Meeting Locations/Times

We choose the meeting time and location the night before for our morning flights and choose again in the afternoon for our evening flights. These decisions are made depending on the weather, wind speed and direction, and the sunrise and sunset times. For our morning flights the flight status line will be updated the night before between 10:30pm – 11:00pm. For evening flights our flight status line will be updated between 2:15pm – 2:30pm on the day of flight. Meeting times will vary throughout the year but are likely to be at sunrise for our morning flights which could be (4:30am – 7:30am) depending on the month in which you fly. Also depending on the month in which you fly, we meet two to three hours before sunset (4:00pm – 6:30pm). The exact meeting time and location for your flight will be given once you call the flight status line number.

Attire

The temperature in the air is usually the same as on the ground so wear clothing suitable for the local forecasted weather. Trousers, long sleeves, and flat shoes are recommended attire – and natural fibers are better than nylon. A hat or a cap is useful to protect your head from the heat of the burners. Also, don't forget to bring your camera and twice as much film or an extra memory card!! Please also remember to wear suitable foot wear for an outdoor adventure, making sure that they have heal and ankle support. High heels, sandals, and flip flops are not acceptable.
